L'inevitabile passione che nasce pur consapevoli che ci sono dei limiti che non si dovrebbero superare per non mettere a repentaglio carriera e reputazione, solo che non conta più niente quando i sentimenti vengono ricambiati e vorresti combattere contro tutti e tutto pur di avere la tua fetta di felicità. Questa è a grandi linee la tempesta emozionale che viene vissuta dai protagonisti di questo libro intitolato Nocturne scritto da Andrea Randall / Charles Sheehan-Miles : Savannah Marshall talentuosa suonatrice di flauto,  e Gregory Fitzgerald affascinante violoncellista di successo e insegnate di conservatorio. 

Il romanzo incomincia con l'audizione di Savannah per entrare al conservatorio, Gregory è uno degli esaminatori. La ragazza si fa subito notare per la qualità dell'esecuzione dei pezzi preparati. L'impatto è immediato e va diritto al cuore del violoncellista che non fa trasparire nulla dalla sua espressione e la congeda con uno svogliato gesto della mano. Anni dopo, si incontrano ancora quando Gregory sostituisce una collega al corso di teoria di musica.
