“You. In.” She pointed to the room behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder.

“In there?” I smirked again, but her cheeks didn’t get any redder, to my astonishment. “Is now really the time?”

She pushed against my naked chest, her steely eyes fixed on my face the whole time, then slammed the door behind us with her foot.

“If you wanted some private time together, you just had to say so.” I joked, leaning back against the chair that was positioned in front of the mirror in my dressing room.

“You think this is funny?” Kate asked, her head tilted to the side.

“Actually … yeah.” I nodded and smiled again, not unkindly.

Kate looked down, and for one God-awful moment I thought she was going to cry.

Then, she did something better than crying. Holy mother of crap sticks, was this better than crying.

She raised her hands to the top of her black button-up shirt—and she undid the top button. Creamy, white skin is exposed, defined collarbones, teasing my eyes down to—

She undid another button. Holy fuck, what was Kate doing? Her cleavage heaved in front of me, and I got a hint, just a hint of her black lacy bra.

“It cannot be a coincidence that one man is shirtless in front of me six times in two weeks.”

I grinned. She’d counted.

That totally means she’s into it.

Then she did something that completely surprised me. Hell, it shocked the living daylight out of me. In one fluid movement, she grabbed the sides of her shirt and pulled, popping open her entire top and then shrugging it over her shoulders so she stood there in the world’s hottest black, lacy bra, skin-tight black denim jeans and these shoes—how the hell did I not notice them before?—that were red, high, and sexy as sin.

I swallowed. “So … this is a revenge …” Swallow, “… strip?”

“This is me, trying to do something to get you to pay attention and listen when I ask you to do something.” Kate’s voice was honey as it melted into me.

I raised my hand to the back of my neck and rubbed at the muscles there that had suddenly become tight with tension. “Oh, I’m paying attention, all right.” I widened my eyes. There was absolutely no doubt about that right now.

“Get back stage, Lee. Seriously. This is your last warning.”

I swallowed again, and felt the clamminess of perspiration beading my brow. Was it hot in here? It sure felt hot.

She stepped close to me, till her chest was almost touching my chest. Shit, she smelt like soap and hairspray and … apples. Delicious.

“I …” My gaze flicked to her lips, and I wondered if it would really be that bad if I kissed her. After all, that wouldn’t be promising her marriage, and maybe she’d be up for a casual thing. And her lips—they were so red, and plump, and—oh God, she just licked them with that sweet-as-hell little tongue, and—

The palm of her hand made contact with my face before I even registered her arm moving. Five elegant fingers stung my cheek and I jerked backward, clutching my face in pain. “What the hell?”

Kate walked over to where her shirt lay on the floor and picked it up, casually shrugging it on. She had the biggest shit-eating grin on her face, and I couldn’t help but give a little smile myself. I’d not seen her look so animated since she first boarded the bus.

“I told you it was your final warning,” she said, doing up her buttons, then turned to the door, wrenching it open and making a sweeping gesture with her arm, allowing me passage through. “Now, Mr Collins, if you please.”

“Thanks,” I mumbled, walking past her and out into the corridor. I passed Xander’s door, and a thought flashed through my mind. What if she stripped for all the guys to get them on stage? I couldn’t have her just—

“Lee?” The voice halted me in my tracks. I spun to face her.

She threw my black shirt at me. “Put some clothes on.”

Lauren K. McKellar is an author and editor. Ho letto questo Paranormal Romance durante le vacanze natalizie, avete presente, no? Cielo color del ghiaccio, neve a terra e copertina sulle gambe… Eppure dopo pochissimi capitoli, più che immaginare un luogo dove l’orizzonte abbraccia un mare di infiniti azzurri, mi ci sono ritrovata proprio dentro. La descrizione del paesaggio maldiviano e di ogni singolo elemento che compone il resort che funge da “prigione” rendono già di per sé magica questa storia.

Solo Victoria, l’inconcludente e disinteressata protagonista del libro (scritto in prima persona) sembra essere immune alla bellezza del luogo, d’altra parte per lei quella resta pur sempre una gabbia. Victoria non fa nulla per rendersi simpatica, anzi, in più di un’occasione viene voglia di alzare gli occhi al cielo.

“Io non mi preoccupo di come posso apparire agli altri e di quello che pensa in generale la gente di me, perché la verità è che non mi interessa affatto la gente.”

Rende l’idea?

Questa sua caratteristica però è ciò che rende ancora più forte il legame che si sviluppa fra lei e il lettore man mano che i dettagli del suo passato vengono a galla (per usare un termine inerente alla trama J ). Già, perché sembra difficile diventare una Fata dei Boschi quando tua madre non c’è più (forse con la testa non c’era già da tempo) e come ultimo ricordo ti ha lasciato un incidente che ti ha resa sterile e un padre totalmente assente ad eccezione del conto in banca. Quindi a Victoria non perdoniamo il suo temperamento. Siete d’accordo?

Ma qualcosa che cattura l’interessa di Victoria finalmente approda (sempre per restare in tema) e onestamente si fa fatica a restarne indifferenti. Ed ecco che arriviamo al passaggio che ho preferito in assoluto, la scoperta della profezia che grava su Victoria e il popolo di Hydra, l’incontro con i Custodi e con Merea.

“Era la creatura più bella che avessi mai visto e per un attimo dimenticai la paura e ammirai lo splendore di quell’essere etereo e irreale.”

Quello di Hydra è davvero un mondo a sé, l’autrice ne ha disegnato dapprima l’involucro stupendo con le sue descrizioni dettagliate e poi si è superata aggiungendo una marea (non riesco a farne a meno!) di dettagli, quali usi e costumi, oggetti e cibi. Davvero sensazionale. E per non farsi mancare proprio nulla, ci ha regalato anche otto fantastiche creature tutte diverse fra loro, ma nessuna da buttare via (per la serie, non ci siamo fatti mancare proprio niente, eh?).

“Davanti a te straniera, tu vedi i discendenti di quella fiera razza che abita il fondo degli abissi. Il suo futuro e coloro tra di essi che ne custodiscono i doni più preziosi: I Custodi.”

Certo la permanenza su Hydra non è proprio una scampagnata e convivere con un popolo che in comune con quello da cui provieni è molto più difficile di quanto sembri, nonostante l’interesse per uno di questi Custodi alleggerisca le fatiche.

“Una piccola, prepotente parte di me voleva restare per sempre accanto a lui, voleva vivere in quel modo semplice e primitivo, in un mondo magico e sconosciuto, accanto ad uno degli uomini più straordinari che avrei mai avuto occasione di incontrare, volevo imparare a conoscerlo e amarlo.”

Il finale lascia intendere che ci sarà un seguito. O meglio, voglio ben sperarlo per l’autrice, dato che l’assillerò fino a quando non lo avrà pubblicato. Davvero una piacevolissima lettura. Tantissimi complimenti anche per la cover. Sarà anche vero che non bisogna giudicare un libro dalla sua copertina, ma il detto “Anche l’occhio vuole la sua parte”, dove lo mettiamo?

Ama cucinare per rilassarsi, adora gli animali e il mare, ma la sua passione più grande sono i libri fantasy. Pactum Vampiri, vincitore del Premio Letterario Scrittori con Gusto 2013, è il suo romanzo di esordio ma attualmente sta lavorando alla stesura del seguito. Ufficialmente, la ragione per la quale Gabby vuole divorziare da Wolfe è che lui ha sempre parlato di tornare in Florida, il suo stato di nascita, mentre lei non vuole abbandonare il suo paese, e poi essersi sposati così presto ( lei ha solo 22 anni e si sono sposati 3 anni fa ) ha influito sul loro futuro. Lei non vuole essere un peso per lui, obbligarlo a fare scelte in cui non crede per poi sentirselo rinfacciare più avanti. Sarà davvero per questo?

Wolfe, non ha nessuna intenzione di tornare in Florida, Gabby sa essere cocciuta e ostinata ma lui ne è pazzamente innamorato e non rimpiange il suo matrimonio. Lei è quella giusta e ne era convinto fin dal loro primo incontro. Se è vero ciò che lei dice, che è arrivata addirittura ad odiarlo, allora la lascerà andare per il suo bene e si rassegnerà ad una vita di solitudine e cuore infranto.

Ci sono una serie di vicissitudini che renderanno questo libro più incalzante di quanto possiate immaginare, il fattore romance è presente ma solo in modo marginale, scene da pugno nello stomaco rendono ancora più intensa questa serie che mi ha stupito con tutti i tre libri.

Fin dal primo romanzo Broken Promises ( il ritorno di Mallory a Casper e la sua riappacificazione con Luke ) si capiva che le cose tra Gabby e Wolfe non andavano ed erano già separati, ma certi sguardi furtivi lasciavano intendere che tra loro le cose erano irrisolte. 

Il libro si è concluso in modo soddisfacente e non sono mancati i colpi di scena e vivere quella tensione, domandandosi: risolveranno i loro problemi? ricuciranno il loro rapporto? 

L'inglese è facile, niente di insormontabile, ma devo avvertirvi che i romanzi di questa serie non sono passeggiatine. Niente pic nic in una bel campo di fiori o discorsi romantici e spensierati. La vita con i suoi problemi e le tragedie, si fa sentire con tutta la sua brutalità. Ma ci sono anche aspetti sereni che permettono la continuazione del romanzo senza piangere per tutta la durata, il gruppo di amici di Casper è molto unito, l'amicizia e l'essere uniti nel momento di maggiore difficoltà e' prioritario per tutti loro. E' molto confortante sapere di avere al proprio fianco persone così generose e affidabili.

Per chi non conoscesse questa serie, vi consiglio di iniziare dal primo. Si possono leggere separatamente ma già che ci siete, fatelo con ordine. Piccolo avvertimento : il secondo libro Broken Dreams sarà bello tosto ( Rainey e Baker ). 

Il gruppetto di Casper non ci abbandonerà, l'autrice ha in serbo ancora delle sorprese niente male. Restate in zona per saperne di più!!
