Amore per Kalli, o Kalliope, non esiste o almeno non lo ha mai conosciuto. Quello che le hanno sempre dichiarato in realtà è dipendenza e ossessione per l'effetto che ha sugli esseri umani.

Kalliope è una musa, ha il potere di trasmettere agli artisti l'ispirazione per la loro arte che sia pittura, scultura o scrittura. Loro ne rimangono dipendenti, come se fosse una droga, incapaci di creare ancora se lei non fosse rimasta al loro fianco.

Il suo incontro con Wilder è stato casuale, generalmente le sue "prede" le individua in facoltà mentre lui lo ha conosciuto in un supermercato, segno del destino?

“What nourishes me also destroys me” 

Kalli ha  bisogno di scaricare il suo potere su gli artisti, altrimenti imploderebbe, ne va della sua vita. E' un atto che spesso si confonde con il sesso o ha comunque implicazioni sessuali. Non è possibile per lei iniziare una relazione seria con Wilder, il misterioso ragazzo con gli occhiali che le ha fatto dimenticare di essere un essere immortale e di voler solo essere una ragazza umana, ordinaria con la possibilità di essere amata come ha sempre sognato. Wilder non è un artista perciò le sarebbe impossibile lasciare andare il suo potere senza ferire nessuno, oltre che se stessa.

E' un gioco a rincorrersi quello tra Kalli e Wilder, lui innamorato perso al primo sguardo, lei spaventata di fargli del male. Non si arrende mai e la prega in ogni lingua di dargli una possibilità. Le sue dichiarazioni sono davvero dolci e appassionate, è incredibile come un ragazzo di ventitre anni sia in grado di esprimere così chiaramente i propri sentimenti.

“Something that small shouldn't be so powerful, but I swear there's this pull between us, and every time I touch her, every time I even look at her, it gets stronger. Like she's an ocean tide, and I'm caught up in her current. And there's no point in fighting my way to the surface because I don't know which way is up or down. I don't know anything except that I want her.”

Kalli scappa finché non rimane senza fiato e si arrende tra le braccia di Wilder promettendosi di affrontare il piccolo problema dell'immortalità appena possibile. 

Kalliope è una musa della mitologia greca, quindi non è poi così assurdo che uno scagnozzo di Ade si intrometta nella sua vita portando negli inferi il povero ragazzo. Decisa più che mai a diventare padrona del suo destino, lo insegue per salvare il suo amore.

“I love her, and I love Mom, and I would do just about anything for them. But when you think stuff like that … you think of grand, heroic gestures. Pushing someone out of the way of a moving vehicle. Standing between them and danger. Sacrificing something important. But it's not like that. Not at all. It's not one big moment, it's a thousand. It's every day. And you don't sacrifice just one important thing, you sacrifice a little more and a little more until you start to feel hollowed out. It's not the sacrifice that hurts so much as the thought that it will never end. That you're stuck in your fate, and nothing and no one can change it. You’ll just keep giving and giving until you don’t even know who you are.” 

Trattandosi di una serie, il romanzo si conclude con un cliffhanger. Il romanzo è molto avvincente ed essendo un paranormal romance, è ancora più interessante. Wilder si esprime con una tenerezza e una passione che va bel oltre al sospiro, si desidera tantissimo che Kalli gli racconti i suoi segreti e che lui li accetti portandoci al lieto fine.... penso ci arriveremo ma non con questo libro. Ci si legge prossimamente per la continuazione!!!
